SiKanda www.si-kanda.org is a registered, Oaxaca-based (Mexico) organization that facilitates and conducts participatory processes of development that enhance the living conditions of impoverished and marginalized communities. SiKanda is an indigenous Mixtec word that means "movement" which represents Sikandas mission to be continuously motivated to move towards a more just world.

Pepenadores

Currently SiKanda is working directly with the city’s pepenadores. ‘Pepenador’ is Mexican word to define a person who lives of the trash. The pepenadores are scavengers or informal garbage pickers who sort and sell the recyclable material from the municipal dump. They work 10 hours or more a day for an average daily income of $2.5 (USD). Sikanda is working hard to improve health conditions, to diversify the pepenadores income generation and to dignify their work through education of others.
